The Cambous prehistoric site

The Cambous prehistoric site at Viols-en-Laval in the Hérault department is a unique archaeological gem in Europe. Dating from the Copper Age (around 2700 to 2300 BC), it is one of the oldest known villages on the continent. It offers rare evidence of the Neolithic culture known as “Fontbouisse”.

Unique architectural testimony to the Copper Age

The village stands out for its dry-stone architecture, a durable material that has been exceptionally well preserved. The dwellings, organized in groups of 8 to 10 houses, feature thick walls and elongated floor plans with apsidal ends. These are typical of the period. A house has even been rebuilt to offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the region’s first farmers.
